marriage
Traditionally marriage between a man and woman was through an arranged marriage. If a man was interested in a woman whom he has not spoken too, his parents would arrange an engagement ceremony with the woman's parents. The bride-to-be would have no input pertaining to the wedding.

Marriages are still arranged, but now the participants have input on the choice of their spouse. Rejecting the parent's arrangement is tolerated. A young woman can reject her parent's wishes, but many are not willing to do so.

The practice of arrange marriage has remained due to tradition and religion. Most Cambodians are Buddhist. In the Buddhist religion parents are obligated to find spouses for their children. The children are obligated to do what their parents say to keep their parent's honor.
